Professor Pedro Romano Martinez, President of the General Assembly of the Institute of Private Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and Member of its Research Centre for Private Law, passed away on October 23, 2023.
Throughout an academic career that spans four decades, Professor Pedro Romano Martinez distinguished himself for works of high scientific value published particularly in the fields of Civil Law, Labour Law and Insurance Law.
Of particular note in his vast and multifaceted work are the monographs on Subcontrato, Cumprimento Defeituoso em Especial na Compra e Venda, Locação e Empreitada, and Da Cessação do Contrato, as well as textbooks on Direito do Trabalho, Direito das Obrigações (parte especial) – contratos, Direito dos Seguros and, finally, Introdução do Estudo do Direito.
He was also Director of the International Journal of Labour Law, published within the scope of CIDP.
Professor Pedro Romano Martinez also made important contributions to the production of national legislation in the field of Labour Law and Insurance Law; as an arbitrator and jurisconsult, he also leaves a mark on jurisprudence relating, among other matters, to construction contracts.
His commitment to the institutional life of the Faculty and its Research Centre for Private Law constitutes a rare example of personal dedication to the public cause, which he pursued until the final moments of his life.
The Board of Directors of the Research Centre for Private Law bows before the memory of the Illustrious Colleague and Friend who leaves us prematurely and presents its most heartfelt condolences to his Family.
